Riverdale, N.Y. – Sophomore
Tyler McDine (Suffern, N.Y.) was the lone Mount Saint Mary player to score in double figures on Saturday, netting a career-high 22 points in a tough 80-70 road conference loss at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
Mount Saint Mary's lone lead of the day came on the opening basket of the game, a
Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) conversion in the opening minute to give the Knights and early 2-0 advantage. From there the Dolphins used a 12-2 run to open a 12-4 edge with 13:57 left before halftime.
The Knights battled back to jump in front 17-16 on a
Jason Oder (Levittown, N.Y.) three-pointer, but saw Mount Saint Vincent close the half on a 23-5 run over the final 8:05 of the half to carry a 37-22 lead into the intermission.
The Knights shot just under 32-percent from the floor in the first half, while the Dolphins knocked in six three-point field goals, including three triples from Madison Martinez, to open the 15 point lead. Wolff led the Knights at the break with six points.
The Dolphins ballooned their lead to 48-25 early in the second half on a Ammad Alkhulaidi conversion in the first four minutes and gained their largest lead of the game on an Alkhulaidi three-pointer that gave Mount Saint Vincent a 61-34 lead with just over 11 minutes left in regulation.
The Knights sliced the Mount Saint Vincent advantage to 68-62 with a 13-2 spurt capped by a McDine three-point field goal with 2:29 left in the contest. The Dolphins spread their lead back to 13 points on a Martinez jumper before taking the final 10 point advantage on a pair of Martinez free-throws in the final seven seconds.
Mount Saint Mary shot better than 42-percent from the floor in the second half, but saw the Dolphins convert at better than 45-percenet and can four more three-point field goals after halftime. McDine went 4-for-5 from the floor after halftime, including two three-pointers, and went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line.
McDine closed out the day 12-for-14 from the free-throw line, setting a career-high in free-throw makes, on his way to his career-high point total. He added three assists and five rebounds for the Knights. Freshman
T.J. Patsalos (Newburgh, N.Y.) scored nine points off the bench with
Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.) leading the team with nine rebounds.
Mount Saint Vincent was paced by 22 points and 15 rebounds from Alkhulaidi, with Martinez adding 20 points and a team-high four assists.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game shooting 38.2-percent overall, but saw 24 turnovers translated into 32 Mount Saint Vincent points on the afternoon.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 3-4 overall on the season and to 1-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will return to league play on Tuesday when they welcome Old Westbury to the Kaplan Center. Tip-off with the Panthers is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
