Jones’ Career-High Leads Mount Saint Mary Past Elmira

Sophomore nets 25 points, named to All-Tournament Team

Elmira, N.Y. – Sophomore Jason Jones (Lansdale, Pa.) led four players in double-figures with a career-high 25 points on Saturday as the Mount Saint Mary Men's Basketball team won the consolation game of the Elmira Tip-Off Tournament, topping the hosts 83-71.
 
After falling behind by 14 points in the first eight minutes on Saturday, the Knights outscored Elmira 35-19 over the final 12:50 of the first half to carry a slim 44-42 lead into halftime. Mount Saint Mary shot a blistering 59.1-percent from the floor in the opening stanza and went 4-for-7 from three-point range.
 
Jones finished the first 20 minutes going 4-for-4 overall and 3-for-3 from behind the arc on his way to 14 first half points. Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) added eight points in the first period on 3-for-4 shooting for the Mount.
 
Coming out of halftime, Elmira moved in front 49-48 on a Henry Cuffee dunk and spread its lead to 67-57 on a Justin Ruback conversion with 8:06 left; before Mount Saint Mary began a furious comeback to storm past the hosts.
 
After falling behind by double-figures, the Knights scored the next 18 points to pull in front for good in the game. Jones started the run with back-to-back buckets and scored nine points overall in the run that saw the Knights move in front 75-67 on a Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.) bucket with just over two minutes left in the contest.
 
Mount Saint Mary moved its lead to double-figures on a pair of Jones free-throws in the final minute and took its largest lead of the day, the final 12 points advantage, when Wolff converted a pair of free-throws with 27 seconds left in the game.
 
After shooting just shy of 41-percent from the floor in the second half, Mount Saint Mary finished the game converting at 49-percent overall. The Knights canned seven three-pointers in the game and finished 28-for-35 from the free-throw line.
 
Jones added 11 points in the second half to finish with his career-high. He rounded out the day 8-for-11 from the floor overall and 4-for-5 from the three-point line on his way to representing Mount Saint Mary on the All-Tournament Team. He added eight rebounds for the Knights in the win.
 
Wolff reached double-figures for the second time in three games after adding 14 points, going 4-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Steyer finished with a double-double, chipping in with 11 points and 11 rebounds with freshman T.J. Patsalos (Newburgh, N.Y.) reaching double-figures for the first time in his career with 10 points. Wolff and Steyer led the team with four assists each for the Mount.
 
Elmira was led by 18 points from Gino Leonardi who posted 18 points and got 12 points on the day from Justin Porrett.
 
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 2-1 overall on the young season. The Knights will open conference play on November 24 when it travels to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Tip-off with the Bears is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
