Box Score 2 UNION, N.J. – On the final day of the Kean Cougar Classic, hosted by Kean University, the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (5-4) came away with a split, falling to host Kean (4-4), 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16), and then bouncing back to defeat Skyline Conference rival Farmingdale State College (3-4), 3-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22), in a non-conference matchup on Saturday.
Senior middle blocker
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts this weekend, which include 28 kills in 15 sets.
The Knights hit just .046 in their opening match on Saturday. Junior outside hitter
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) threw down a match-high 13 kills. Sophomore setter
Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) dished out 31 assists, while freshman libero
Chelsea Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) led the Knights with 17 digs. Junior right side
Kaitlin O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 10 digs and served up four service aces in the match.
The Mount recovered nicely in its tournament finale, hitting .248 in the four-set victory over Farmingdale State. The Knights did not hit below .200 in any set in the match. Farmingdale hit a solid .241 in the match as well, making for a competitive contest.
Sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) hit an excellent .524 with 12 kills, while Candarelli swung at a .444 clip and matched Sabatini with 12 kills. Kurka added nine more to her day in the second match. Scully passed out a season-high 41 assists and picked up seven service aces.
The Knights now get a few days to rest before participating in a tri-match hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson-College at Florham Wednesday evening. They will open up the night with a 6:30 non-conference match against Skyline opponent Maritime College, and finish the evening with an 8:30 contest against FDU-Florham.
