Box Score 2 UNION, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (4-3) turned in a big evening on Friday, cashing in a pair of victories on the first day of the Kean Cougar Classic hosted by Kean University. The Knights made quick work of Centenary College (N.J.) (0-6) with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-17) sweep in their opening match, and then went a thrilling five sets with Frostburg State University (1-4), coming out on top, 3-2 (6-25, 25-20, 12-25, 25-19, 17-15).
The Knights never trailed in the opening match against the Cyclones en route to a quick 3-0 victory. Senior outside hitter
Katie Lynch (Island Park, N.Y.) hit .350 in the match and tied for the team lead of eight kills with junior outside hitter
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.). Sophomore setter
Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) dished out 18 assists, while freshman libero
Chelsea Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) led with nine digs as the Knights held their opponents to a -.127 hitting percentage.
The Knights looked to be in trouble as they kicked off their second match of the evening by getting blown out in the opening set, 25-6. They bounced back in the second game, winning 25-20 to even the match with Frostburg State at 1-1. Frostburg took control again with an easy 25-12 conquest in the third stanza, but the Knights managed to tie it up once again with a 25-19 win in the fourth.
The Knights had complete control early in the fifth set, going up 8-3 in the first-to-15 game. Frostburg proved resilient and battled its way back into the lead, serving for match point with a 14-11 advantage. The Knights would not go down easy and took the next four points to earn a match point of their own at 15-14, but Frostburg held on to tie it up once again. Senior middle blocker
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) threw down a kill to put the Knights up by one before an attack error by Frostburg's Aimee Petrides clinched the exhilarating fifth set and the match for the Mount.
The Knights came out on top despite hitting -.062 against Frostburg. Lynch led the Knights again with six kills, while Kurka followed with five. Barberan picked up 15 digs, and Scully added 12 of her own to go with another 18 assists and a team-high six service aces.
Frostburg hit .081 in the match and was led by Petrides' 12 kills. Zoe Harris added nine, while Madelyn Torres passed out a match-high 23 assists.
The Knights get back to work in the Kean Cougar Classic tomorrow, Sept. 6, when they face off with host Kean University at 10 a.m., followed by a 12 p.m. matchup with Skyline rival Farmingdale State College in a non-conference matchup.
