Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener at Vassar, 1-0

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After playing to a scoreless draw for the first two-thirds of the game, Vassar College's Chloe Wheeler netted the only score of the game to give the Brewers (1-0) the 1-0 opening-day victory over the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team (0-1) Friday evening at Gordon Field.

Wheeler received a feed off a through ball from Jessica Schwed to the top-right corner of the box, setting her up to find the left corner of the net at the 61:41 mark to give the Brewers the only score of the game.

Earlier in the second half, senior forward Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) had the Knights' best chance to score, but narrowly missed and fired it off the crossbar.

Emma Nichols made four saves to earn the shutout victory for Vassar Friday evening. Freshman goalkeeper Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) suffered the loss in her first collegiate start for the Knights, but matched Nichols with four stops.

Vassar held a slight 8-7 edge in total shots in Friday's season opener, while also taking a 3-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Segreto led all players with five shots, three of which went on net. Wheeler led the Brewers with four shots in the game, putting all of them on goal.

The Knights will look to bounce back in their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they play host to Ramapo College for a non-conference matchup. Wednesday's contest is set to kick off at 7 p.m. under the lights at Kaplan Field.
