Women’s Basketball Unable to Contain Sage in 79-61 Defeat

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. – A late first half surge gave the home team a commanding lead as the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (3-16, 3-6 Skyline) fell at The Sage Colleges (12-7, 7-2 Skyline), 79-61, Tuesday evening at Kahl Gym.

The Knights held a 24-23 lead late in the first half, but the Gators quickly turned things around and went on a 19-4 run to close out the half with a 42-28 lead. Sage shot well in the second half, and the Knights played them evenly in the closing frame, but it was not enough to get the visitors within striking distance, as the Gators walked away with an 18-point victory.

Senior forward Rachel Perrone's (Poughquag, N.Y.) double-double streak came to a halt at five games, but she still turned in a solid effort with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Junior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) added 16 points and five boards.

Krysta Vanacore led the Gators with 20 points on the evening. Megan Bowman followed with 11 points, while Sara Tironi added 10. Frankie Pearson led the home team with seven boards on the evening.

The Knights shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) in Tuesday's loss, but were just 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Sage's bench made a big difference, adding 21 points for the victorious Gators.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8, when they travel to Patchogue, N.Y. for a Skyline Conference matchup against St. Joseph's College (L.I.). The Knights were triumphant in their previous matchup with the Golden Eagles, defeating them 70-54 at the Kaplan Center back on Jan. 18. Tip-off for Saturday's matchup is set for 2 p.m.
