GLASSBORO, N.J. – A rough first half doomed the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team (1-7), as it trailed by 23 points at the break, leading to a 74-51 loss at Rowan University (8-1) Saturday afternoon.
The Knights shot just under 21 percent (6-of-29) in the opening frame of Saturday's contest, while their hosts made 44.8 percent (13-of-29) of their shots to take a 41-18 lead into the locker room. The Knights improved in the second stanza, shooting 43.3 percent (13-of-30), but it only led to a 33-33 draw in second-half points. The Profs managed to improve their field-goal percentage in the second half, making 13-of-25 (52 percent) attempts.
Rowan's Ike Robinson led all scorers with 17 points and six rebounds in Saturday's matchup. Dan Brogen contributed another 13 points, while Skylar Moore added 10. Mike Simpson handed out a game-high five assists.
Junior guard
Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the only Knight to reach double-digits, pacing the team with 10 points. Sophomore forward
Alex Smith (Marlboro, N.Y.) pulled down five boards and added seven points and a pair of blocks. Freshman guard
Tyler McDine (Suffern, N.Y.) did not score, but contributed four assists, four rebounds and a steal in Saturday's affair.
The Profs outrebounded the Knights, 45-29, in their win. They dominated the paint to the tune of a 38-16 scoring advantage from in close. The Profs also got 46 points from their bench on Saturday, while the Knight bench contributed 24 points.
The Knights return home for their final game of the 2014 calendar year on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when they host Marywood University at the Kaplan Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. They will next play after that on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, against SUNY Canton at the Kaplan Center as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
