St. Joseph's (L.I.) StatisticsPURCHASE, N.Y. – After defeating No. 6 Maritime College in Wednesday evening's Skyline Conference Championship First-Round match, the third-seeded Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (16-19) advances to Friday's semifinal round, in which the Knights will take on No. 2-seed and defending conference champion St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (19-10) at 7 p.m. The semifinal and final rounds of the Skyline Conference Championships will take place at Purchase College as part of the Second Annual Skyline Conference Fall Festival.
The Knights and Golden Eagles faced off earlier this season. Back on Oct. 11, the two contenders played evenly into the fifth set in the final match of a Skyline tri-match at the Kaplan Center. The Golden Eagles triumphed with a 15-9 victory in the final game.
Both teams had three student-athletes each that were named to the 2014 Skyline Women's Volleyball All-Conference Teams. St. Joe's Heather Ferchland was named the Skyline Player of the Year. She leads the conference with a .368 attack percentage while ranking second in kills (3.45 per game) and third in points (4.02 per game). She was named Skyline Player of the Week four times this season. She made the First Team for the second straight year, and is a three-time All-Skyline athlete.
Joining Ferchland on the First Team is teammate Julianne Tierney. Tierney ranks second in the Skyline this season with 7.47 assists per set. Courtney Wickline also earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. Her 3.19 digs per set are seventh best in the conference. .
Sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) earned herself a spot a spot on the First Team after her second strong season with the Knights. She is averaging 2.40 kills per set and hitting .121 on the year. She ranks sixth in the conference in kills per set and 10th in points with 2.80 per game. She was named Skyline Women's Volleyball Player of the Week on Nov. 3.
Junior outside hitter
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) and freshman libero
Chelsea Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) were both tabbed for spots on the All-Skyline Second Team. Kurka finished just behind Sabatini's 233 kills with 229 of her own. She has averaged 2.14 kills per set, good for 10th in the Skyline, and is hitting at a .115 clip for the season. She is adding .92 digs per game and has 23 total blocks on the year. Barberan leads the Skyline Conference with 4.59 digs per set this year, and sits second in total digs with 413. She was twice named Skyline Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week, earning the award on Sept. 15 and Oct. 13.
Also taking place Friday evening will be the 5 p.m. semifinal match between No. 1 The Sage Colleges and No. 4 College of Mount Saint Vincent. The winners of each semifinal match will face off on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m.
