Women’s Basketball Drops Skyline Opener to The Sage Colleges, 66-54

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (0-10, 0-1 Skyline) fell to The Sage Colleges (4-4, 1-0 Skyline) in their Skyline Conference opener Tuesday evening at the Kaplan Center.

The Knights opened the game with an 8-0 run over the first five minutes. Sage slowly chipped away before Chelsea Martin finally tied the game with a three-pointer with five minutes remaining in the half. Junior guard Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) responded with a trey of her own to put the Knights up 19-16. Sage scored six out of the last nine points in the half to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room.

To start the second half, Romao hit consecutive free throws to tie the game at 25. Sage then responded with a pair of free throws of their own. At 12:38 the Knights cut a four-point deficit down to two with a jumper from sophomore forward Catie Grace (Carmel, N.Y.). After trailing 46-34 the Knights scored seven consecutive points to cut the score down to 46-41 before Sage sank a free-throw making it 47-41 and kept the momentum going with a three-pointer from Frankie Pearson. The Knights kept fighting, as they scored six consecutive points to make the score 52-47 when Grace brought the game within three points with another jumper. The teams continued to trade points before Sage finally pulled away over the final three and a half minutes with a 10-1 stretch to run away with a 12 point victory.

The Knights were led by senior forward Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) who recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 16 boards. Junior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) contributed 14 points and three boards. Romao had a strong outing with 13 points, three rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Frankie Pearson led the Gators to victory with 17 points and two rebounds. Megan Bowman contributed 5 boards and 15 points and Lea McClain recorded 10 points and six rebounds.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Farmingdale State College for a 1 p.m. Skyline Conference matchup.
