Box Score
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College sophomore
Shanice Robe (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored twice inside a span of four minutes early in the second half, helping to boost her team to a 2-1 victory over SUNY Plattsburgh in non-conference action Saturday. The Knights improve to 1-3 overall, while the Cardinals drop back to 1-3-1.
Following a lackluster first half, the second opened with an explosion of offense. In the 50th minute, Mount junior
Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) slotted a diagonal pass through to the left side of the field, hitting Robe in stride for a finish at the far post and the game's first goal. The same two players connected in the 54th minute, this time with DiSilvio playing a more vertical ball to Robe for a shot that ticked off the goalkeeper before bouncing forward into the net.
Plattsburgh would answer quickly, however, and cut the deficit back to one with a tally in the 55th minute. Sophomore Devin McMahon (Holbrook, N.Y.) collected the ball in the middle of the field and then flipped a pass out to the right side to find sophomore Melissa Rodriguez (Somers, N.Y.). Rodriguez made the most of her opportunity, drilling a shot through the Mount goalkeeper and into the netting.
The Cardinals would push forward as the clock ticked under twenty minutes, but Mount sophomore goalkeeper
Abigail McQuillen (Greenville, N.Y.) was up to the task, turning away a pair of shots from Plattsburgh senior Emily LaLone (Watertown, N.Y.). The Knights killed off the final five minutes very efficiently to preserve the 2-1 margin of victory.
McQuillen made just the two saves to earn her first win of the season. Plattsburgh junior Kristy Kirkpatrick (Irondequoit, N.Y.) made four saves in the second half, but suffered the loss.
The Knights continue non-conference play this Wednesday with a trip to Rutgers-Newark. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
