Mount Strikes First, But Falls in Season Opener at Vassar

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Despite scoring the opening goal of the game, the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team lost its season opener to Vassar College by a final score of 4-1 on Friday evening.  The Brewers move to 1-0, while the Knights open up at 0-1.

Sophomore Shanice Robe (Valley Stream, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, chipping a shot over the Vassar goalkeeper following a feed from senior Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.J.).

The Brewers would be quick to answer, however, as junior Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) put home the first of her two goals in the 15th minute.  Wheeler followed with her second tally in the 30th minute, a goal that would stand up as the game-winner.

Mount Saint Mary wound up just ahead in terms of overall shots (18-16) and the teams finished even in shots on goal with nine each.  Sophomore goalie Emma Nichols (Lexington, Mass.) made eight saves to earn the win for the Brewers.

The Knights return to action on Monday evening with a scrimmage against the Albany College of Pharmacy.  Their next regulation game is scheduled for Saturday, September 7 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
