NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (0-8) dropped its 2013 calendar year finale to Rutgers-Newark (5-3), 82-47, Monday evening at the Kaplan Center.
The Scarlet Raiders took the lead 61 seconds into the game and never looked back, quickly running out to an 11-0 advantage before the Knights finally got on the board. Rutgers-Newark led by as much as 40 points in Monday evening's contest.
ShaQuanna Marshall led the visitors with 21 points on the evening, which included six three-pointers. Arianna Williams, who made five threes, followed with 17 points and led the team with six assists. Jade Howard and Jasmine Lombard each picked up a double-double; Howard with 12 points and 10 boards, while Lombard scored 14 and grabbed 12 rebounds off the bench.

Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and junior guard
Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) tied for the team lead with nine points each on the evening. Senior forwards
Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) and
Jessica Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) each followed with eight, and had six and seven rebounds, respectively. Sophomore guard
Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) dished out a team-high five assists and picked up two steals.
The Knights shot 45.8 percent (11-of-24) in the first half, but just 17.2 percent (5-of-29) in the second frame for a night percentage of 30.2 percent (16-of-53). The Scarlet Raiders dominated in the paint, outrebounded the home team, 56-37, and outscoring them in the paint, 36-16.
The Knights next play in the new calendar year, when they travel to St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, for a non-conference matchup with the Bears. Tip-off that evening is scheduled for 7 p.m.
