MAHWAH, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (15-19) went 1-1 in a tri-match hosted by Ramapo College (16-15) on Saturday. The Knights picked up a 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Fairleigh Dickinson-College at Florham (16-20) in their opening match before falling, 3-1 (16-25, 14-25, 25-22, 18-25), to the host Roadrunners.
Though it was a tight three-set match, the Knights recorded a .206 hitting percentage compared to just .084 for FDU-Florham to pick up the win in their first match. Sophomore middle blocker
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) led the way with 12 kills and an outstanding hitting percentage of .800. Freshman setter
Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) dished out 38 assists and picked up 16 digs. FDU-Florham's Helena Riede led the team with 10 kills in the loss.
The Knights were not as efficient in their second matchup, hitting just .057 compared to a .174 hitting percentage for Ramapo en route to a 3-1 defeat. Freshman outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) threw down 12 kills, while freshman setter
Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) led the team with 18 assists. Sophomore libero
Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) had a team-high 20 digs, while sophomore right side
Kaitlin O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with 19.
Ramapo's Sara Pendleton picked up a match-high 18 kills, while Kaitlin Mac Iver also led the match with 35 assists. Emily Harris recorded an impressive defensive effort with 32 digs.
The Knights return to action tomorrow, Nov .3, in their final tune-up before the Skyline Conference Championships. They play host to The College at Old Westbury at noon in a match that will have no effect on the Skyline Conference standings heading into the postseason.
