NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College swept Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday, 9-0, in the home opener for the Knights. MSMC moves to 2-0 overall, while the Gryphons drop back to 1-2.
For the second straight match, the Mount dominated the doubles action. Senior
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) paired with junior
Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) claimed an 8-2 win at first doubles, while sophomore
Alissa Niad (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior
Jill Saydlowski (Milford, Conn.) won by the same score at third doubles. Freshmen
Morgan Holbrook (Montgomery, N.Y.) and
Ashlynne O'Brien (Washingtonville, N.Y.) pitched a shutout at second doubles, taking an 8-0 decision.
In singles action, Murphy-Goldberg nabbed a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the top of the lineup. Holbrook walked away with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second, while Lubniewski snagged a 6-1, 6-2 win at third. O'Brien was impressive in a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth and Saydlowski eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth. Rounding out the sweep, junior
Jillian Torre (Bohemia, N.Y.) fought her way to a 6-4, 6-4 win in the sixth slot.
Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Monday with a non-conference match against Ramapo College. The match is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
