Knights Fall to New Paltz in Season Opener

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Junior goalkeeper Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made 10 saves on Friday afternoon, but SUNY New Paltz scored the game's lone goal in the 74th minute to claim a 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the season opener for both teams.

New Paltz senior Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y.) headed in a cross from the right side to provide the eventual game-winner.  Sophomore Rebecca Rothman (Oceanside, N.Y.) was credited with an assist on the play.

The Mount managed two shots on goal, both in the first half.  Freshman Shanice Robe (Valley Stream, N.Y.) put a long attempt on goal in the 13th minute, while freshman Casey Collins (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) had a chance in the 31st minute.

The Hawks held a 3-2 advantage in shots at the half, but controlled the action over the course of the final forty-five minutes.  Mancini had already made five saves before Bowling's deciding goal finally broke up a scoreless tie.

With little time to recover, Mount Saint Mary takes on SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.  The game will be played at New Paltz.
