Hartwick Shuts Down Mount

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of 2012, falling to Hartwick College by a final score of 14-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday.  The Knights are now 1-1, while the Hawks move to 1-0.

It was an even start to the contest, and when Mount freshman David Hobbs (Baldwin, N.Y.) beat his man one-on-one for a goal at the six-minute mark, the game was tied at 1-1.  Hartwick closed the quarter with a pair of goals, however, as junior Jake Cooper (Manilus, N.Y.) assisted on goals by sophomore Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Harry Hughes (Holtsville, N.Y.).

The Hartwick run continued through the second quarter, with Hughes adding three more tallies to give the Hawks a 7-1 lead at the half.  Junior Giuseppe Rice (Peekskill, N.Y.) scored the highlight goal of the game, finding the back of the net on a behind-the-back shot at the 4:26 mark.

Stretching in to the fourth quarter, the Hartwick run reached 12 goals and the Hawks led 13-1 with 8:09 remaining in the contest.  Mount junior Nick Findlay (Elmont, N.Y.) broke through with a unassisted tally at the 7:12 mark of the fourth and then freshman CJ Cardo (Merrick, N.Y.) closed the scoring with an unassisted goal with 38 seconds to go.

Hughes led the way for the Hawks, finishing with six goals and an assist.  Sophomore Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist, while Rice and Ciolino each finished with a goal and an assist.

Sophomore goalie Shawn Cobstill (Oneonta, N.Y.) made nine saves for the Knights, while sophomore Matt Buonocore  was credited with five caused turnovers and seven groundballs.  Sophomore Stephen White (Schenectady, N.Y.) won 10-of-15 faceoffs.

For their next scheduled contest, he Knights host Lebanon Valley College on Saturday, March 3.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
