Knights Down NYU Poly, 64-43

Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team cruised to a 64-43 point win over Skyline Conference opponent, the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. The Knights improve to 21-3 overall and 12-1 in conference play, while the Fighting Blue Jays drop to 10-14 on the season and 5-8 in the Skyline.

After struggling to jump ahead by double-digits, Mount senior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) knocked down a three-pointer with 11:01 on the clock to put the Knights up by eleven, 14-3. The Fighting Blue Jays fought back and consecutive free throws by junior Shelby Bruns (Elko, N.V.) pulled Poly to within five, 26-21, with 1:42 remaining in the first.

The Knights used a 7-0 run to close out the first half and put themselves on top, 33-21, at the conclusion of the first. Over half of the Knights' points in the first half were the result of NYU Poly turnovers.

Opening the second half on a 21-4 run moved the Knights ahead by 29, 54-25, with just over 12 minutes to play. At the 6:11 mark, a jumper by Mount senior Kelly Dempsey (Hicksville, N.Y.) gave the Knights their largest lead of the night, 62-32.

Following Dempsey's jumper, the Mount remained scoreless until the final 33 seconds. During the closing six minutes the Fighting Blue Jays cut the lead to as little as 19. Sophomore Tabitha Larsen (Ramsey, N.J.) nailed a jumper with under two minutes to go to make it 62-43. The Fighting Blue Jays would not get closer than 19 and the Mount earned their twelfth Skyline win of the year.

Mount senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) led the Knights with 14 points. Horvers added 12 points and sophomore Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and six boards.


NYU Poly senior Margaux Pickell (Howell, N.J.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Bruns contributed 10 points and 7 boards and freshman Catherine Thompson (Spackenkill, N.Y.) added 10 points.

The Knights gear up for a showdown with Farmingdale State College on Saturday, February 18. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by a men's game.
