NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team escaped a fiesty Norwich University basketball squad on Friday night, prevailing in overtime by a final score of 55-51. With the win, the Knights improve to 5-3 on the year, while Norwich drops to an even 4-4.
Trailing by six with under two minutes to play, Norwich junior Kristin Brown (Williamstown, VT.) knocked down a three pointer to bring the Cadets to within three. With a chance to seal to game, Mount junior
Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) missed the front end of a one-and-one. With 19 seconds showing on the clock, Norwich inbounded the ball to sophomore Aliah Curry. Standing in the corner, Curry swished one from down town to tie the game, 43-43.
With a one point lead in the overtime period, Mount sophomore
Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) connected from behind the three point line at the top of the key and well beyond the arc to push the Knights ahead by four, 52-48. Mount senior
Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) converted two free throws, with 31 seconds showing on the clock, to ice the game for the Knights.
Perrone led the way for the Knights with 18 points and 11 boards. Sophomore
Rottisha Lewis (Norwalk, Conn.) also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Romao added 14 points for the Knights.
Despite a consistent shadow from Mount senior
Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.), Curry still managed to score a game-high 20 points. Sophomore Kelsey Lotti (South Yarmouth, Maine) added 16 points and 4 rebounds.
After breaking for finals, the Knights return to the road on Saturday, December 15, as they travel to William Paterson. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
