West Conn Spoils Knights' Home Opener

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Plagued by cold shooting, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team was not able to surpass Western Connecticut State and fell, 55-43, in their home opener. The Knights move to 1-2 on the year, while the Colonials advance to 3-1.

Both teams struggled to score in the opening minutes of the first half, but a jumper by Mount sophomore Amanda Smith (Dayton, Ohio) at the 12:55 mark put the Knights on top, 8-2. From this point West Conn would take control, as the Colonials rattled off 13 unanswered points to take a 15-8 lead. At the break West Conn held a 25-14 lead, their largest of the game at that point.

Ahead by 11 and with just under ten minutes to play, West Conn senior Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) drained back to back three pointers to put the Knights in a 17 point hole. The Knights began to chip away at the deficit and a layup by Smith at the 2:50 mark brought them to within 12. Just 40 seconds later, Mount sophomore Rottisha Lewis (Norwalk, Conn.) converted a three point play to make it a nine point game, 52-43. A string of missed buckets by the Knights and made free throws by the Colonials sealed the final score, 55-43.

Lewis recorded a double-double, with 15 points and 11 boards. Smith was the only other Knight to reach double digits, with 13 points. Mount senior Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) tallied nine points and seven rebounds.

Zilnicki put together an impressive performance, totaling 20 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) just missed double digits, scoring nine points.

The Knights return to action on Monday, November 26 at Rutgers-Newark. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
