Knights Beat College of Staten Island in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. - In their season opener, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team posted a 62-49 decision over the College of Staten Island in the Emerson College Tip-Off Tournament. The Knights are 1-0 on the young season, while the Dolphins fall to 0-1. 

Mount senior Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) opened up the scoring just 15 seconds into the contest, as she drained a jumper to give the Knights a quick 2-0 lead. With just over eight minutes to play in the first, senior Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) knocked down a jumper to push the Knights ahead by 13, 23-10. The Mount fell into a scoreless drought for a four minute span in the waning minutes of the first and the Dolphins creeped back to within eight, 27-19, by the break.

Both teams struggled to score in the opening minutes of the second half, but College of Staten Island senior Olivia Tierno (Staten Island, N.Y.) converted a lay up at the 17:06 mark to cap a 5-0 run and cut the Knights' lead to three, 27-24. Mount junior Amanda Smith (Dayton, Ohio) and Metzger responded with back to back three pointers to move the Knights ahead by nine. The Knights cruised in the final 15 minutes, as Perrone and sophomore Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the way with nine points each.

Perrone finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds, while Candarelli followed closely behind with 13 points. Metzger and sophomore Rottisha Lewis (Norwalk, Conn.) led the effort on the glass with 11 and 13 rebounds, respectively.

College of Staten Island sophomore Nikki Fabozzi (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Freshman Lisa Galasso (Staten Island, N.Y.) also tallied double digit scoring with 10 points.

The Knights will face off with Emerson College in the Championship Game of the Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
