NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team dominated Saturday's Skyline Conference tri-match, sweeping straight-set matches from Purchase College and St. Joseph's College. The Knights have now won 11 of their last 12 in improving to 13-7 overall (5-0 Skyline).
Mount Saint Mary made quick work of Purchase in the opening match of the day, cruising to a three-set win (25-17, 25-6, 25-18). Senior
Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) led the team with 12 kills and completed a double-double with 10 digs. Freshman
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) had 11 kills and sophomore
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) totaled seven, completing a strong effort from the middle. Senior
Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) emerged with 30 assists and five aces.
In match two, the Knights fell behind in the opening set and were forced to spend a timeout trailing 19-16. Mount Saint Mary picked up an immediate side-out following the stop in the action and then rattled off eight straight points on Kurka's serve to claim a 25-19 victory. The Knights took set two, 25-20, and then eased to a three-set win, 25-15 in the third.
Kurka led the team this team, totaling 11 kills for the second straight match. Candarelli added eight more kills and Raftery came away with seven kills to go along with 15 digs. Halverson racked up 31 assists.
The Knights continue Skyline play on Tuesday. They'll host Maritime College at 7:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
