Knights Win Two, Clinch Regular Season Skyline Title

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - For the third year in a row, Mount Saint Mary College has captured the regular season Skyline Conference title for women's volleyball.  The Knights defeated Old Westbury and Farmingdale to improve to 19-8 overall and to 8-0 inside the Skyline.

MSMC raced out to a quick start against Old Westbury, taking the opening set, 25-3.  The team completed a sweep of the Panthers with 25-16 and 25-17 set wins.  Senior Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) finished off a double-double, leading the team in both kills (11) and digs (13).  Freshman Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) added nine kills, while senior Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) racked up 31 assists to go along with four kills, five aces, and 10 digs.

The Knights needed four sets to put away Farmingdale in the second match of the day.  After splitting the opening two sets, the Mount took control with a 25-23 win in set three and put the match away with a 25-22 win in set four.  Raftery led the team once again, this time with 15 kills.  Sophomore Katie Lynch (Island Park, N.Y.) put together a nice effort, completing a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.  Kurka contributed 10 kills without an error and Halverson totaled 40 assists.

Mount Saint Mary has now won 28 consecutive regular season matches in the Skyline Conference.  The team's last regular season loss came to Farmingdale in five sets on October 24, 2009.

Looking ahead, the Knights will host Bard College on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m.
