Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team earned a 72-44 win over SUNY College at Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference contest. The win improves the Knights to 10-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Skyline play. The Panthers drop to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in the Skyline.
After exchanging buckets in the opening minutes of the half, a series of missed shots and turnovers plagued the Knights and the Panthers used the opportunity to jump out to a 10-3 lead with 16:00 on the clock. A pair of free throws by Mount senior
Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) finally got the Knights going and they dominated the next four minutes with a 12-2 scoring run that put them in the lead, 15-12. Mocanu accounted for six of the 12 points during the run. The Panthers responded using back-to-back buckets by junior Antoinette Jolly (Inwood, N.Y.) and sophomore Deslyn Applewhaite (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to regain a one point lead (16-15) with 7:19 remaining in the first stanza.
In the closing minutes of the first half both teams continued to battle to establish a lead and with 4:04 left on the clock Applewhaite tipped in the ball to once again make it a one point game (21-20) in favor of the Knights. Both teams remained scoreless as the clock wound down, but with just nine seconds on the clock Mount freshman
Kristina Nieves (Fair Lawn, N.J.) converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Knights a 24-20 lead going into halftime.
Mocanu and McCullough got the Knights off to a quick start in the second half, as each added a lay-up with less than a minute elapsed to put the Knights up by eight (28-20). The Panthers remained scoreless in the second half until Applewhaite drilled a jumper with 17:04 on the clock to cut the deficit to 11.
At the 13:56 mark, Horvers converted a pair from the free throw line and she went on to add 13 points in the following three-minute span. Horvers drilled three consecutive shots from behind the three-point arc and finished out her 13 point run with another pair of free throws that put the Knights up, 50-28.
With under ten minutes on the clock, McCullough added a seven point run that sealed the win for the Knights. McCullough converted three free throws and two layups during the run that increased the lead to 29 (60-31).
Three Panthers tallied double-digit scoring; Applewhaite added 13 points, Jolly netted 10 points and sophomore Ruth Vargas (Harlem, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points.
Horvers led all-scorers with 20 points, while McCullough capped off an impressive day with 11 points, 10 boards and nine assists. Mocanu added 14 points and Nieves finished with 10 points.
The Knights will fight to remain unbeaten in Skyline play on Tuesday, as they play host to The Sage Colleges. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
