Knights Withstand Late Challenge from Old Westbury, Prevail 68-64

Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College sophomore Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Knights in scoring for the third straight game, this time with 20 points, as his team held on for a 68-64 victory over Old Westbury in Skyline Conference action.  The Knights are now 7-4 overall (2-2 Skyline), while the Panthers drop to 5-6 overall (2-2 Skyline).

Trailing by three at the half (28-25), the Knights opened the second period on an 8-0 run to seize a five-point advantage.  The Mount extended their lead to as many as 11 when sophomore Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer with 7:02 remaining to make it 59-48, Knights.

Old Westbury wouldn't go away, however, and with back-to-back buckets inside of three minutes, the Panthers crept to within three (63-60) with 2:44 to play.  Following a Mount turnover, Old Westbury sophomore Rob Sanders (New York, N.Y.) made one-of-two at the line to make it 63-61.

The score would remain the same into the game's final 30 seconds.  Old Westbury junior Kerel Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a chance to tie the game with 25 seconds remaining, but his jumper was off the mark.  Mount senior Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) made two huge free throws to push the lead back to four (65-61).

The Panthers still weren't done though.  On the ensuing possession, Mitchell drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit back to one (65-64) with eight seconds to play.  This time, it was Mount sophomore Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) who drained a pair of free throws to make it 67-64.  Now with four seconds remaining, the Knights fouled Sanders to prevent a game-tying three-pointer.  Sanders missed both free throw attempts, Valdez cleaned up the glass, and was promptly fouled.  The senior made one-of-two at the line to ice the game, 68-64.

Stabach hit on 8-of-17 from the field and 4-of-11 from three for a team-high 20 points.  Valdez added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Howell pitched in with 13 points and four assists.  Senior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) contributed six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Mitchell led the Panthers with 23 points on 9-of-16 from the field.  Sanders and freshman Omari Trebuse (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added 10 points for Old Westbury.

The Knights continue their Skyline schedule at Sage on Tuesday, January 10.  The tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
