Knights Oust Caltech, Close California Swing on High Note

Box Score PASADENA, Calif. - Boosted by 19 points from sophomore Joe Stabach (Staten island, N.Y.) and a double-double from senior Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico), the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team closed their California trip with a 73-60 victory over the California Institue of Technology on Tuesday evening.  The Knights improved to 6-4 overall, while the Beavers dropped to 5-6.

The Knights closed the opening half on a 10-0 run to grab a 13-point lead at the break, 42-29.  Caltech would trim the lead to as few as five in the second half, but senior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) answered with back-to-back buckets to put the Mount back ahead by a comfortable margin.  The Beavers would threaten one more time, cutting the lead to six as the clock ticked under five minutes to play, but the Knights responded with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.  A three-pointer from Stabach with 3:29 to go proved to be the dagger, as it gave the Mount an insurmountable 13-point advantage.

Stabach hit on 7-of-13 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point range to finish with a game-high 19 points.  Valdez connected on 5-of-8 from the field and 6-of-8 at the line to finish with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Milella added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while sophomore Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Knights shot 50.0-percent from the field and committed just 10 turnovers, while limiting Caltech to 42.1-percent from the floor.  The Beavers shot just 6-of-23 from three and turned it over 16 times.

Upoin returning from California, Mount Saint Mary plays at SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday, January 7.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
