Mount Survives Scare at Purchase

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – It was the tale of two halves, as the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team overcame an eight point deficit at the half to best Purchase College in a Skyline Conference contest. With the win, the Knights improve to 13-2 and preserve their unbeaten, 6-0, record in the conference. The Panthers drop to 4-9 and are still looking for their first win in Skyline play.

The Knights scored the first bucket of the game and with 9:17 left on the clock a layup by junior Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) increased their lead to six, 15-9. Purchase senior Alyssa Guido (Cliffside Park, N.J.) cut the lead in half when she drilled a three-pointer, to make the score 15-12 in favor of the Knights. Guido's shot ignited a 17-6 run that spanned the closing nine minutes of the half to put the Panthers on top, 29-21, at the conclusion of the first stanza.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Purchase junior Jessica Bullock (Thiells, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper to increase the Panthers' lead to eight, 35-27. Mount senior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) quickly responded with one from behind the three-point arc and the Knights erupted for a 21-0 run, eight of which Horvers contributed.

With a thirteen point cushion, 48-35, following the run, the Mount cruised through the final ten minutes of the game. The Knights shot a hot 51.5-percent from the field in the second half, while limiting the Panthers to 25.0-percent from the field.

Once again, Mount senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) led the Knights in scoring with 24 points. Horvers chipped in with 17 points and teammate Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) added eight points.

Guido led the Panthers with 14 points, while sophomore Jess Lindsay (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman Christina Rupp (Ossining, N.Y.) added 10 points each.

In their next outing, the Knights will travel to Polytechnic Institute of New York University for another Skyline Conference match-up. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
