NEWARK, N.J. - Rutgers-Newark senior Liana Abreu scored her third goal of the game in overtime to lift the Scarlet Raiders over the Mount by a score of 3-2. The Knights drop to 2-1 with their first loss of the season, while the Scarlet Raiders even their record at 2-2.
The Knights struck first in the 32nd minute of play when freshman
Nicole Gianotti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal. Sophomore
Brigit Burgio (Riverhead, N.Y.) crossed the ball to the left side of the box and Gianotti buried the shot from 15 yards out. Both teams remained scoreless in the waning minutes of the first half.
Abreu evened the scored (1-1) in the opening minute of the second half off a breakaway opportunity down the middle of the field. The Mount responded in the 74th minute of play, when sophomore
Sara Sheehan (Beacon, N.Y.) tallied her second goal of the season. Sheehan scored off a pass from freshman
Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) to put the Knights back on top by a score of 2-1. With just six minutes remaining the game, Abreu headed the ball past Mount goalkeeper sophomore
Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.) to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period the Knights recorded two shots, however the game remained at a deadlock. Rutgers-Newark countered in the 103rd minute when Diana Catarino passed the ball ahead to Abreu. Abreu scored her third goal of the night to give the Scarlet Raiders a 3-2 victory.
The defense was anchored by Mancini, who made seven saves on the evening. Rutgers-Newark goalkeepers Danielle Griscom and Stefani Uthman combined for four saves.
The Knights will look to rebound on Friday, September 9 when they host Albany College of Pharmacy. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
