Knights Sink Privateers

THROGGS NECK, N.Y.- Freshman Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) broke a 0-0 deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half with her first career goal as the Mount went on to defeat Maritime College in a Skyline Conference match-up. The Knights improved to 7-2-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 inside the conference. The loss drops the Privateers to 2-7-1 overall and 0-3 in Skyline play.

Despite holding a 7-1 shot advantage in the first half the Knights struggled to find the back of the net. Both teams remained scoreless going into halftime. In the 48th minute of play DiSilvio received a pass from classmate Nicole Gianotti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). DiSilvio then ripped a shot from 25 yards out that beat Maritime goalkeeper Courtney Marietta to put the Knights on top 1-0.

Sophomore Brigit Burgio (Riverhead, N.Y.) would add an insurance goal in the 59th minute as the Knights capitalized on one of their seven corner kick opportunities. Junior Lindsey Oro (Holtsville, N.Y.) served a corner kick into the box, where Burgio headed it into the goal to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

The Knights tallied 26 shots and limited the Privateers to just one shot. Marietta, the Maritime goalkeeper, finished with 14 saves.

The Mount will host SUNY College at Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference contest on Saturday, October 1 at 1:30 p.m.
