Knights Sweep Weekend Action

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Moving to 4-1 on the season, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team earned a pair of home victories over the weekend. The Knights defeated Misericordia University, 5-4, on Saturday and then opened up Skyline Conference play with a 9-0 defeat of Yeshiva University on Sunday.

The Knights fell into a 2-1 hole after the doubles play on Saturday, as junior Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and sophomore Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) emerged with the only victory, an 8-1 triumph at second doubles.

Mount Saint Mary would storm back, however, snagging four of the six singles matches to claim a 5-4 win. Junior Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) nailed down a 6-4, 6-1 win at first singles, while senior Annie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) and freshman Alissa Niad (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) also claimed straight-set wins at fifth and sixth, respectively. Emily Gregory provided the clinching point with a hard-fought three-set victory at third singles. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, Gregory won the next two, 6-4 and 6-1.

On Sunday, the Knights made quick work of Yeshiva in their Skyline Conference opener. Freshman Rachel Visgilio (East Granby, Conn.) and senior Jackie Ivan (Binghamton, N.Y.) contributed an 8-1 victory at third doubles, while sophomore Jillian Toree (Bohemia, N.Y.) claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at fourth singles.

The women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, September 21 with a home date against Bard College. The match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
