NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – It took five sets, but the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball earned their first win of the season with a 3-2 defeat of Johnson & Wales on Friday night at the New Paltz Hawk Invite. The Knights finished 1-3 at the tournament and now stand at 1-8 for the season.

Mount Saint Mary opened the tournament with a tight, three-set loss to New Paltz. Senior Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.) led the team with eight kills, but the Knights couldn't get over the hump, falling 25-20, 25-22, and 25-23. In their next match, the Knights dominated the opening set (25-12), but dropped the next two (14-25 and 21-25). Thanks to nearly error-free hitting, they were able to take the fourth set (25-17) and then captured the fifth set (15-11) without making an error. Sorrentino led the way once again with 12 kills and also contributed a team-high 14 digs. Raftery posted nine kills and 13 digs, while freshman Taylor Woegens (Bogota, N.J.) added 10 kills. Halverson tallied 35 assists and five aces.

Facing undefeated Clarkson University on Saturday, the Knights lost a narrow first set (23-25) and then quickly dropped sets two (16-25) and three (11-25). Sorrentino and Raftery each had six kills.

Mount Saint Mary closed out the tournament with a straight-set loss to Fredonia State University. Game scores were 19-25, 6-25, and 19-25.
