Sara Sheehan (Beacon, N.Y.) broke a 0-0 tie in the 76th minute off an assist from freshman
Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) and the Mount went on to defeat Bard College in their season opener. The Knights are now 1-0 on the season, while the Raptors stand at 0-1.
The Knights opened their 2011 campaign looking hungry to score. In the opening 23 minutes of play the Mount tallied three shots on goal, while preventing the Raptors from taking a shot on goal.
Sophomore
Brigit Burgio (Riverhead, N.Y.) almost got the Knights on the board in the 64th minute of play, but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar. In the 76th minute of play DiSilvio created a breakaway opportunity when she played the ball ahead to Sheehan. Sheehan placed her shot past Bard goalkeeper Jenn Osher for her first point of the season.
Just four minutes after Sheehan's goal, the Knights struck again. Freshman
Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) added insurance for the Mount, when she scored her first collegiate goal off a high shot.
Sheehan recorded five shots on goal and four other Knights each added a shot on goal. Sophomore
Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.) finished with three saves.Ten new members of the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team debuted in the win.
Up next the Knights will open their home schedule against Albertus Magnus College. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m. as part of a double-header on Saturday, September 3.
