Mount Falls to Hunter in Opening Round

BALTIMORE, Md. – In their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Tournament, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team lost an opening round match to Hunter College by a final score of 5-1. The Knights finish the season with a record of 15-4.

In doubles play, the Knights would drop the opening two matches before snagging the final match at second doubles. Sophomores Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and Jennifer Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) rallied for an 8-5 win in the second position, sending the Mount to the singles play trailing only 2-1.  Down 5-4, the Gregory sisters fought off three break points and eventually claimed the game to make it 5-5.  They went on to win the next three games to claim the match.

Unfortunately, the Hawks would prove to be too much for the Knights in singles action. Sophomore Linnea Mowat (Cornwall, N.Y.) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at third singles, while sophomore Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) came away with a 6-3, 6-0 loss at the top of the lineup. Hunter clinched the match when Ericka Jaramillo defeated freshman Johanna Seidel (Forestburgh, N.Y.) at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-1.

The other three singles matches were well-contested. Emily Gregory had lost the opening set in the second position, but was tied at 3-3 in the second set. At fourth singles, Jen Gregory had captured the opening set and was well on her way to a victory, leading 2-1 in the second set. Junior Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) won the opening set (6-3) at fifth singles and trailed 3-1 in the second.

Hunter, which improved to 17-8 overall, advances to play Tufts University in the second round on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
