Mocanu and Horvers Excel in Skyline Contest

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Skyline Conference play tonight after posting a 64-43 decision over Polytechnic Institute of NYU. The Knights are now 19-2 overall and 15-0 in Skyline play. The Blue Jays move to 14-5 on the season and 10-3 in Skyline play. 

Blue Jay senior Kristin Leitheuser drained a three-pointer to get the first points on the board and NYU-Poly built up to a 5-4 lead with 17:04 remaining in the first half. The Knights gained their first lead at the 16:33 mark when sophomore Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper. Hartnett's jumper pushed the score to 6-5 in favor of the Knights, a lead that would hold for the rest of the game. Junior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) contributed nine first half points and the Knights carried a 36-21 lead into the locker room at the half. 

Junior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) had the hot hand for the Knights in the second half. Mocanu netted 13 points throughout the half to solidify the win for the Knights. A converted free throw by Mocanu with 10:21 left in the game gave the Knights a 25 point lead, which would prove to be their largest of the evening. Horvers chipped in with seven points in the second half and Hartnett added four en route to the 21-point victory. 

Mocanu finished the evening with a game –high 19 points and Horvers added 16 points to complement her seven rebounds. Hartnett also reached double figures with 10 points in addition to grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Becky Metzer (Point Pleasant, N.J.) played a well-rounded game netting six points and tallying seven rebounds. Leitheuser scored a team-high 16 points for the Blue Jays. 

The Knights return to the Kaplan Center for action on Thursday, February 10. Yeshiva University will travel to Mount Saint Mary College for a Skyline Conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
