Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – Mount Saint Mary College senior
Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) netted a jumper with no time remaining on the clock to lead the Knights past previously undefeated Western Connecticut State, 60-58. The Knights improve to 7-1 overall, while the Colonials fall to the same record.
A tight contest throughout, both teams grappled for the lead in the opening half. Neither team led by more than five in the first stanza and the game was deadlocked at 29-29 going into halftime.
It looked as if the momentum had finally swung in the Knights favor with just under ten minutes remaining in the game when Mocanu scored back-to-back jumpers to put the Mount up by seven, 51-44, which was their largest lead of the night. Mocanu's jumpers ignited a 7-3 run that increased the Knights' lead to nine, 56-47, with 5:02 left on the clock.
Trailing by their largest deficit of the night, Colonials junior Nicole Eanniello knocked down a three-pointer to make the score, 56-50. Eanniello's three-pointer set off an 11-2 run as the Colonials dominated the closing minutes of the game.
With just 1:11 remaining on the clock, WestConn freshman Amber Litwinko banked in a lay up to knot things up at 58-58. Mount senior
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) stole the ball with 42 seconds left on the clock and set the Knights up to put the game away. With 24 seconds remaining Horvers missed a three-pointer that was rebounded by WestConn.
WestConn senior Stephanie Slonski took a shot in the final six seconds, but her game-winning attempt was off the mark. A turnover by Slonski with three seconds showing on the clock created a final scoring possession for the Knights. Mocanu netted the game-winning jumper with no time left on the clock and junior
Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) was credited with the assist.
Mocanu led all-scorers with 29 points and Horvers chipped in with 12 points. Junior Becky Metzer (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and McCullough each grabbed six rebounds, while McCullough also dished out five assists.
Two Colonials, junior Carly Murphy and sophomore Caroline Brasa, each netted 14 points. Murphy also led the team in rebounding with nine.
The Knights return to action on Friday, December 9. The Mount will host Rutgers-Newark at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
