PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Behind four double-digit scoring performances, Mount Saint Mary College cruised to a 72-46 win over Skyline Conference opponent, St. Joseph's College. The Knights are now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Skyline play, while the Golden Eagles move to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline.
Despite scoring the first bucket of the game, the Knights struggled to pull away from the Golden Eagles in the opening half of the game. The Knights jumped ahead by eight, their largest lead of the night, with 7:24 remaining in the first when Mount junior Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) stole the ball and nailed a jumper. The Golden Eagles battled back and the Mount saw their lead dwindle to two with less than four minutes to go. The Knights used an 11-5 run to close out the half and put them back on top by eight, 34-26.
Mount senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) combined with McCullough for 20 of the second half points. A jumper by McCullough with less than ten minutes to go ignited an 8-0 run for the Knights that put the game away for good. Sophomore Samantha Rizzo (Millbrook, N.Y.) added five points in the closing minute of the game to push the lead to 26, 72-46.
Mocanu led all scorers with 19 points, while McCullough added 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Freshman Kristina Nieves (Fair Lawn, N.J.) put together a complete game with 16 points and seven boards. Junior Kate Harnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Knights on the glass, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and senior Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) chipped in with 11 points.
The Knights limited the Golden Eagles to shooting just 26.0-percent from the field. Danielle Hamlin scored a team-high ten points and collected nine rebounds.
The Knights return to the road for a non-conference match-up against Western Connecticut State on Tuesday, December 6. The Mount will travel to Danbury, Conn. for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
