Knights Fall to St. Joe’s in Well-Played Contest

Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – In a game where neither team led by more the seven points, the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team fell to St. Joseph's College, 91-87, in Skyline Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  The Knights dropped to 3-3 overall (0-2 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles remained unbeaten at 5-0 (2-0 Skyline).

A tight game right to the end, Mount Saint Mary claimed a one-point lead (82-81) when sophomore Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer with three minutes remaining.  St. Joseph's responded, however, with back-to-back three-pointers from seniors Olivier Laurent (Amityville, N.Y.) and Chris Jimenez (Huntington Station, N.Y.).

Following a timeout, Stabach knocked down a jumper to cut the deficit to three (87-84) with 1:27 on the clock.  The Knights got a defensive stop at the other and then senior Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game.

Forced to foul, the Knights sent Laurent to the line with 24 seconds remaining and he sunk both attempts to make it 89-86.  Junior Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) missed a three-pointer that would have tied it, but sophomore Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) kept the play alive with an offensive rebound.  He was fouled, but could only make one-of-two at the line.  Now down two, the Knights fouled Jimenez with eight seconds remaining.  The senior coolly sunk both attempts to ice the game and give the Golden Eagles a four-point win.

Valdez, who went over the 1,000-point mark on Thursday against Purchase, led the Knights with 24 points on 10-of-12 from the field.  He completed his fifth straight double-double with 14 rebounds.  Pisciotta added 13 points, Stabach pitched in with 11, and senior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) contributed 11 points and nine boards.

Jimenez hit six times from three and finished with 24 points to go along with six rebounds.  Laurent added 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while senior Trey Black (Bayport, N.Y.) racked up 14 points, five rebounds, and six assists.

Both teams shot the ball well with the Knights connecting at 43.1-percent and the Golden Eagles at 46.2-percent.  St. Joseph's connected on 14-of-33 (42.4-percent) attempts from three-point range.

The Knights, still seeking their first Skyline win of the year, host Yeshiva University on Wednesday evening.  The tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
