Mocanu Lifts Mount Over Lehman

Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Behind a 27 point performance by senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team defeated Lehman College, 61-53, in a non-conference contest. After two wins in as many days, the Knights improve to 9-1 on the season, while the Lightning fall to 4-6 overall.

After overcoming a deficit last night to best Rutgers-Newark, the Knights took the early lead against Lehman. The Mount used an 8-2 to quickly build an 8-2 lead with just three minutes elapsed on the clock. Lehman stopped the run with a bucket, but the Knights responded with a 6-2 that increased the lead, 14-5, in the Knights' favor. At the conclusion of the first half, the Knights possessed a convincing 38-22 lead.

Mount senior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) netted a jumper with 17:18 showing on the clock to give the Knights a 16 point lead, however a scoring drought that spanned more than six minutes followed for the Knights. Lehman took advantage of the Knights' drought and back-t0-back buckets by senior Leslie Mencia (Montpelier, V.T.) and junior Paula Robinson (Bronx, N.Y.)  less than thirty seconds apart pulled the Lightning to within 10, 42-32.

A Robinson jumper cut the Knights' lead to seven, 44-37, at the 10:05 mark. Right after checking into the game with just under nine minutes remaining, Mount sophomore Fallon Witte (Loudonville, N.Y.) stole the ball and played it ahead to Mocanu. Mocanu banked in a layup and ignited an 11-0 run for the Knights that put them back on top by 18, 55-37.

A string of turnovers, missed shots and missed free throws, around the five minute mark, plagued the Knights and left the door open for the Lightning. With just 3:45 left on the clock, Mencia drained a three-pointer and teammate Jalessa Gordon (Queens, N.Y.) followed with a quick layup to bring the game to within 11, 57-46.

Mocanu went two-for-two from the free throw line to give the Knights a thirteen point cushion, however Mencia knocked down another one from downtown to cut the lead to just 10, 59-49. Mount freshman Kasey Heyda (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) slashed to the hoop with just 1:42 remaining in the game to put the Knights on top, 61-49, and seal the win.

Mocanu led all scorers with 27 points and Horvers was the only other Knight to reach double-digits with 12 points. Horvers grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, junior Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) collected seven boards and classmate Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) chipped in with six boards and four assists.

Gordon and Mencia led the Lightning with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

The Knights will break for finals this week before returning to action on Friday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. In their final game of the first semester, the Mount will host William Paterson University for a non-conference contest.
