Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) scored thirteen second half points to help the Knights erase a two point deficit at the half and go on to best Montclair State University, 66-57, in a non-conference contest. The Mount moved to 3-1 on the season.
Both teams battled for the lead in the opening minutes of the first half and the game was tied on six different occasions in the first 20 minutes. Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) scored a lay-up at the 1:02 mark to deadlock the game at 24-24. Taylor Jeffers netted a jumper with zero seconds remaining on the clock to give the Red Hawks a 28-26 lead at the half.
Horvers scored consecutive buckets to pull the Knights within one in the opening five minutes of the second half. Senior
Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) drained a jumper with 13:54 remaining in the game to put the Knights up 37-36 and capture the lead for the remainder of the game.
Montclair would cut the deficit back inside the final ten minutes, but another bucket by Mocanu pushed the game out of reach for the Red Hawks. The Knights hit on 9-of-12 attempts from the free throw line in the closing five minutes of the game to solidify the win.
Horvers finished with a game-high 21 points and Mocanu chipped in with 12. Junior
Kate Hartnett (Floral Park N.Y.) added 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Freshman
Kristina Nieves (Fair Lawn, N.J.) scored eight points in addition to nabbing six rebounds.
Janitza Aquino scored 15 points to led the Red Hawks and teammate Colleen Kelly chipped in with 10.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. The Mount will host New York University in a non-conference game.
