NEWBURGH, N.Y. – To stay unbeaten in Skyline Conference play, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team earned a pair of conference wins this weekend, defeating Sage on Friday by a score of 8-1 and St. Joseph's on Saturday by a score of 5-4. The Knights are now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Skyline.
Saturday's win over St. Joseph's became much narrower when junior
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) went down with an injury during a match at first doubles. Murphy-Goldberg was also forced to default in her match at first singles.
The rest of the team picked up the slack, however, as the Knights claimed the other two doubles matches. Juniors
Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and
Jen Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) teamed for an 8-3 win at second doubles, while sophomore
Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) paired with freshman
Alissa Niad (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) for an 8-1 win at third doubles.
In singles play,
Emily Gregory nailed down a 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth singles, leaving the Knights just two points shy of the match. Llewellyn was next to finish, claiming a three-set victory at fifth, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Jen Gregory clinched the match with a hard-fought, straight-sets win at third singles, 6-2, 6-3.
On Friday afternoon at Sage, the Knights swept the doubles matches, with Murphy-Goldberg/Llewellyn and Gregory/Gregory each winning, 8-0. Lubniewski teamed with senior
Jackie Ivan (Binghamton, N.Y.) for an 8-2 win at third.
Mount Saint Mary claimed five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets, for an 8-1 win.
Up next for the Knights is a trip to the National Tennis Center and a match with Hunter College. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11.
