Mount Shuts Down Fighting Blue Jays

NEWBURGH, N.Y.- Nine members of the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team tallied points in a 7-0 win over Skyline Conference opponent, Polytechnic Institute of NYU. The Knights remain unbeaten in Skyline play with a 5-0-0 record and they move to 11-2-1 overall. The loss drops the Fighting Blue Jays to 2-5-0 on the season and 0-4-0 in conference play.

Monroe United
Sophomore Sara Sheehan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) ripped a ball from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net to put the Mount on top 1-0. In the closing minutes of the first half freshman Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) added the Knights' second goal of the game. Sophomore Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.Y.) played a ball from the left side of the field to Segreto and then she drilled a shot to make the score 2-0 at the half.

The Knights wasted no time building on their lead in the second half as freshman Meghan Moran (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) scored her first of three goals in the 47th minute of play.  Moran finished a cross from sophomore Allie Kleine (Vernon, N.J.) past NYU-Poly goalkeeper Catherine Mistretta. In the 68th minute of play, Kleine placed a corner kick into the box and freshman Kim Castro (Vernon, N.J.) headed the ball to the far post to increase the lead (4-0). Moran put the Knights up by five with her second goal of the game in the 69th minute of play. Moran put home a corner kick from the right side of the field taken by senior Colleen Ryan (Point Lookout, N.Y.).

The final two goals of the game were scored in the 78th and 82nd minute, respectively. Another corner kick from Ryan fell to the feet of freshman Nicole Rapetti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), who then placed a shot past Mistretta to put the Knights up 6-0. With just under ten minutes remaining in the game, freshman Nicole Gianotti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) crossed the ball from the left side of the field to Rapetti in the box. Rapetti then played the ball to the right side of the field and Moran finished the play with her third goal of the day.

The Knights tallied 57 shots on the day and did not allow the Fighting Blue Jays to take a shot. Mount freshman Ashley DePietto (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) earned the shutout in goal. Mistretta, the NYU-Poly goalkeeper, totaled 18 saves.

The Mount plays their second game of the weekend tomorrow, Sunday October 9 against New England College. The Knights will be on the road for the non-conference match-up that begins at 2:00 p.m.
