NEWBURGH, N.Y.-In the 95th minute of play, freshman
Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y) scored the game-winning goal as the Knights defeated New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a non-conference contest. The Mount's record now stands at 10-2-1 overall (4-0-0), while the Gothic Knights moved to 10-3 on the season.
The Mount couldn't get on the board during regulation play despite tallying 18 shots, ten of which came in the second half. Sophomore
Sara Sheehan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) almost broke the deadlock in the 77th minute, but NJCU goalkeeper Brittany Hoffman made an athletic save from the turf to keep the Knights off the board. With just under ten minutes remaining in regulation play, the Gothic Knights created a dangerous scoring opportunity. NJCU senior Erica Buonacquista was on the receiving end of a ball played past the Knights' defense and she ripped a shot that missed just right of the post. Mount goalkeeper
Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made a crucial save, diving to her left to stop Julia Caseres in a one-on-one situation, in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.
Just four minutes into the first overtime period, Sheehan ripped a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar to the feet of teammate
Erin McKeon (Waterbury, Conn.). McKeon followed up with a shot that drifted wide of the goal. The Knights used strong pressure to keep the ball in their offensive third of the field in the early minutes of the first overtime period. DiSilvio dribbled towards the right post and then took an off-angle shot that banked off Hoffman into the net to give the Knights the win, 1-0.
Mancini had an impressive night, finishing with five saves. Hoffman, the NJCU goalkeeper, totaled eight saves on the night.
The Knights return to Skyline Conference action on Saturday October 8 as they host Polytechnic Institute of NYU. Game time is set for 12:00 and a men's soccer game will follow.
