Knights Soar Past St. Joseph’s for Ninth Straight Win

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College senior Colleen Ryan (Point Lookout, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half as the Knights extended their winning streak to nine games with a 2-0 victory over St. Joseph's College on Saturday.  The Mount, now 14-2-1 overall, set a new school record for wins in a season and also maintained their hold on the top spot in the Skyline standings at 7-0-0.

Playing with the wind at their backs in the opening half, the Knights controlled the play and created a number of excellent scoring chances.  In the 41st minute, a shot by sophomore Sara Sheehan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) seemed destined to sneak under the bar for a 1-0 lead, but St. Joseph's senior goalkeeper Michelle Gulino (East Setauket, N.Y.) made a fantastic leaping save to preserve the scoreless tie.

Just four minutes later, however, it was Sheehan who created another chance for the Knights.  After winning the ball from a defender, Sheehan played a nifty diagonal ball from the center to Ryan on the left wing.  Ryan was perfectly positioned to rip a shot to the near post and the ball snuck just through the diving keeper's hands for a 1-0 advantage.

Mount Saint Mary carried the momentum into the second half and eventually found an insurance goal in the 67th minute.  A long shot from the left wing by freshman Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) went over the keeper's head and bounced inside the far post to give the Knights a two-goal cushion.

St. Joseph's would have their chances down the stretch, but junior Lindsey Oro (Holtsville, N.Y.) and sophomore Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.Y.) stood tall in the back line to break up several opportunities for the Golden Eagles.  Sophomore goalkeeper Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made six saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season.

The Knights will face Ramapo College in non-conference action on Wednesday.  Originally scheduled for 7:00 p.m., the game will now start at 5:00 p.m.
