NEWBURGH, N.Y.- Mount Saint Mary College freshman
Renee Schultz (Waldwick, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute on Saturday afternoon, sending her team to a 1-0 victory over SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Knights improved to 8-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the Skyline Conference. The Panthers move to 3-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Skyline play.
With play finally opening up early in the second half, Mount sophomore
Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.J.) served a high ball into the box from the center of the field. The cross fell to the head of Schultz, who directed the ball to the near post just past the reach of Panther goalkeeper Caitlin Thomas (Patchogue, N.Y.) to put the Knights on top, 1-0.
In the 68th minute, the Panthers almost tied the game when a shot from senior Cassandra Esposito (Valley Stream, N.Y.) drilled the crossbar before being cleared away from the Knights. Just one minute later, Esposito countered with a breakaway and forced Mount goalkeeper sophomore
Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.) to make a critical save. In the 76th minute of play, Esposito moved Mancini out of position before dishing off the ball to teammate Jordan Schildt (Shirley, N.Y.) who ripped a shot from inside the box. Mount freshman
Megan Schweitzer (Thiells, N.Y.) was there to turn away Schildt's shot to preserve the win for the Knights.
Mancini finished with four saves, while Thomas also totaled four saves. The Knights held a 15-9 advantage in shots.
The Knights will host Sage College in another Skyline Conference contest on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
