ALBANY, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team topped the Sage Gators in overtime to even their Skyline Conference record at 1-1. The winning goal didn't come until the second overtime period when junior
Erin McKeon (Watertown, Conn.) headed in a cross past Sage goalkeeper Brittany McDonald (Schenectady, N.Y.). The win moves the Knights to 4-5 on the season while the Gators fall to 3-3 overall and to 0-2 in the conference.
The Knights couldn't get on the board during regulation play despite taking tallying 17 shots through the two periods. In the second half, the Mount increased the pressure, outshooting Sage, 7-1. Both teams remained scoreless through the end of regulation and the first overtime period.
In the 104th minute of play, freshman
Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.J.) lined up a corner kick and connected with McKeon, who knocked home the game-winner with her head.
Offensively, the Knights were led by McKeon who produced six shots, five of which were on goal. Junior
Gable Herczeg (Bethel, Conn) also contributed offensively with four shots.
The defense was anchored by senior goalkeeper
Megan Cotta (Brick, N.J.), who made seven saves on the afternoon. McDonald, the Sage keeper, made 15 saves.
The Knights host a conference matchup against Polytechnic Institute of NYU on Sunday, September 26. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be held on Kaplan Field.
