NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mount Saint Mary College volleyball team broke through with their first two wins of the season during a Saturday trip to Mitchell College. The Knights defeated the hosts in straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-14) before beating Curry College in four sets (25-19, 25-11, 24-26, 25-8).
In the match with Mitchell, junior
Courtney Kenney (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the way with six kills. Junior
Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.) tallied five kills and also posted a team-high 10 digs. Sophomore
Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) had 21 assists to go along with a team-best three service aces.
Against Curry later in the day, it was the turn of freshman
Kaylene Pennings (Minisink, N.Y.) to shine. Pennings posted 15 kills against just one error and hit .538 during the four-set match. She also recorded an ace and four blocks. Senior
Elizabeth Douress (Rahway, N.J.) and sophomore
Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) each recorded 10 kills. Douress added three aces, while Raftery posted six digs.
Halverson pitched in once again with 43 assists, 11 digs, four aces, and a pair of blocks. Junior
Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) racked up a team-high 14 digs.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday with a road trip to the College of New Rochelle. The match is set for a 7:00 p.m. start.
