FLUSHING, N.Y. - In a tuneup for the NCAA Tournament, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team defeated Hunter College, 6-3, late on Monday evening at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Mount Saint Mary earned two of the three doubles points, taking matches at the second and third positions. Juniors
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) and
Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.)
teamed for an 8-1 decision at second doubles, while freshmen Jennifer Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and
Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) paired for an 8-0 win at third doubles.
The Knights took the match by sweeping the bottom four singles matches. Schwartz was a 6-0, 7-5 winner at third, Jennifer Gregory was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at fourth, and
Emily Gregory earned a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles. Sophomore
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) took a 6-2, 6-1 decision at sixth singles.
Freshman
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) played a tough match at number one singles, eventually falling 6-4, 6-2.
Mount Saint Mary (19-2) opens up the NCAA Tournament against 19th-ranked Skidmore College at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Hunter College (14-7) also heads to the NCAA Tournament, where they will take on Mary Washington in an opening round match.
