Blue Knights Ease Past Lehman

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College senior Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead her team to a 61-46 over Lehman College in non-conference action on Saturday.  The Blue Knights improved to 16-4 overall, while the Lightning dropped to 9-14.

Mount Saint Mary charged out to an early lead as sophomore Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) made back-to-back buckets to give the Blue Knights an 11-0 cushion just five minutes in. Sangster's jumper at the 7:06 mark sent the Mount to its biggest lead of the first half, sixteen, and made the score 19-3. The Lightning would edge back into the game with an 8-0 run, but still trailed 24-13 at the half.

The lead for the Blue Knights fluctuated between 11 and 19 points for the entire second half, but the Lightning never really threatened to make it a game. Lehman freshman Tiana Rosa (Bronx, N.Y.) completed a three-point play with 6:31 to play to get the Lightning within 11 (48-37), but Horvers responded with a three-pointer to erase all thoughts of a comeback.

Sangster, despite shooting 5-of-14 from the field, still managed to post a game-high 16 points. The senior was 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Horvers totaled 12 points, including a pair of big three-pointers, and also grabbed 6 rebounds. Senior Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) also reached double figures for the Blue Knights, finishing with 11 points and 6 assists.

Rosa led the Lightning with 11 points and was the only player to reach double figures. Lehman had just four field goals in the first half and finished the day with a shooting percentage of 27.0-percent.

With their last non-conference game in the books, Mount Saint Mary returns home to take on Bard College on Tuesday, February 9. The tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
