Knights Fall to William Paterson in Non-Conference Tilt

WAYNE, N.J. – Trailing 5-0 to start the fourth set, William Paterson (16-5) rallied for a 25-21 victory and an overall 3-1 match win against visiting Mount Saint Mary College (15-9) on Tuesday.

The Pioneers won the opening two sets, 25-20 and 25-19, before the Knights jumped out to a 12-3 edge en route to a 25-11 win in the third. Trailing 5-0 to open the fourth, William Paterson put together a run to get to 5-6, but Mount Saint Mary scored four of the next five points to surge ahead, 10-6. The Pioneers had an answer, however, riding the serve of junior Kim Runge (Closter, N.J.) for nine consecutive points and a 15-10 lead. The Knights got as close as two at 22-20, but William Paterson closed out the match with a Kelly Shaw (Wallington, N.J.) kill and a poor MSMC set on the final point for the 25-21 win.

Junior Megan Maher (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) contributed 17 kills, 12 assists and seven digs for the Pioneers. Runge and sophomore Michelle Mitchell (Secaucus, N.J.) each had 16 digs, senior Jillian Bronowich (Secaucus, N.J.) posted 16 assists and 10 digs, senior Michelle Leeder (Ridgefield, N.J.) chipped in 10 digs and Shaw finished with eight kills and four blocks.

Sophomore Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) pitched in 38 assists, and junior Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) added 15 digs. Freshman Kaylene Pennings (Minisink, N.Y.) totaled seven kills and six blocks.

Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Saturday with a pair of Skyline Conference matches in Newburgh. The Knights will host the College of Mount Saint Vincent and SUNY College at Old Westbury in a tri-match set for an 11:00 a.m. start.
