Knights Tame Panthers, 2-0

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman Brigit Burgio (Riverhead, N.Y.) broke a 0-0 tie in the 61st minute with an unassisted goal and Mount Saint Mary College went on to defeat Purchase College in a Skyline Conference tilt in Newburgh on Wednesday evening. The Knights improved to 8-7-0 overall and to 5-2-0 inside the conference.

On a free kick opportunity in the 61st minute, junior Colleen Ryan (Point Lookout, N.Y.) played a dangerous ball into the box. After a scramble, Burgio's first attempt was saved by the Purchase goalkeeper. However, the rebound came right back to Burgio and she drilled her second shot into the back of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.

Sophomore Lex Heal (Port Jervis, N.Y.) would add an insurance goal in the 75th minute with a great individual effort. Heal battled a defender down the left side and finally earned enough space to release an excellent shot that bent into the top corner at the near post.

The Knights would fend off a strong Purchase challenge in the final fifteen minutes to earn the shutout. Senior Megan Cotta (Brick, N.J.) made six saves to earn the victory.

The Panthers received strong efforts from junior Ashley Panepinto (North Rockland, N.Y.) and sophomore Abigail Katz (Livingston, N.J.). Panepinto finished with five shots, three on goal, while Katz tallied three shots, one of which was on frame.

Mount Saint Mary continues Skyline Conference play against first-place St. Joseph's College on Saturday, October 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Patchogue, New York.
