Mount Sweeps Weekend Tennis, Clinches Regular Season Skyline Crown

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis extended their winning streak to seven matches and improved to 10-2 overall with a pair of victories over the weekend. The Knights clinched the regular season Skyline Conference title with a 7-2 defeat of Purchase College on Saturday and then defeated Sarah Lawrence College, 7-2, in non-conference action on Sunday.

Against Purchase on Saturday, the Knights jumped all over the Panthers with a sweep of the doubles matches. Sophomore Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) and junior Annie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) were 8-2 winners at first doubles, while senior Lindsay Searle (Farmington, Conn.) and freshman Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) paired for an 8-2 win at second doubles. Sophomores Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and Jen Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) eased to an 8-3 win in the third slot.

Murphy-Goldberg continued her dominance of the top of the lineup with a 6-4, 6-0 win at first singles. Searle took her match, 6-2, 6-1 at second singles, while Jen Gregory snagged a 6-1, 6-2 decision at sixth singles. Emily Gregory provided some excitement at fifth singles, falling behind by losing the first set, 6-2. She rallied to take the second set, 6-1, and then a match tiebreaker, 12-10.

The match tiebreaker wasn't as kind to Llewellyn at fourth singles, as she fell 10-7 after splitting the first two sets. Lubniewski played a tough match at third singles, eventually losing 7-5, 6-3.

The Knights played well again on Sunday, but this time carried just a 2-1 advantage after the doubles action. Murphy-Goldberg and Llewellyn were easy 8-0 winners at first doubles, while the Gregory twins bumped up to cruise to an 8-0 victory at second doubles.

Murphy-Goldberg won in straight sets at first singles (6-0, 6-2), as did Searle at second (6-2, 6-2). Sophomore Linnea Mowat (Cornwall, N.Y.) jumped into the lineup for a 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles. Emily Gregory moved up a spot to win 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles, while Jen Gregory also bumped up to earn a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fifth singles.

Mount Saint Mary closes out their regular season with a non-conference match at Ramapo College on Thursday, October 14. Play commences at 6:30 p.m. in Mahwah, New Jersey.
